Can chiropractic treat fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia can cause widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and difficulty with thinking or concentration. Chiropractic adjustments are not an established cure or a way to reverse the condition. Care usually combines several approaches tailored to the person's symptoms and goals.

Start with an appropriate diagnosis

Symptoms can overlap with other conditions. A medical clinician considers the history, examination, and whether testing is needed to assess other causes. There is no single laboratory or imaging test that confirms fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia can coexist with other medical conditions. New or changing symptoms should not automatically be attributed to an existing diagnosis, especially new weakness, fever, or other concerning changes.

Understanding the condition. The causes are not fully understood, and several biological and environmental factors may contribute. It should not be reduced to spinal misalignment or blocked communication between the brain and body.

Describe the symptoms that matter most, how they affect daily activities, and what you have already tried. This helps the care team set priorities.

Where manual care fits. If you have a separate local muscle or joint complaint, ask whether a specific treatment is appropriate. Evidence for chiropractic management of fibromyalgia is limited, and treatment should not be presented as correcting the underlying cause.

A small study or individual report cannot establish a reliable effect for everyone. Before trying additional care, discuss possible benefit, soreness or flare risk, cost, and a clear point to reassess. Stop and seek advice if symptoms worsen.

Activity and pacing. NIAMS recommends individualized exercise as part of fibromyalgia care, starting at a low level and increasing gradually. A clinician or rehabilitation professional can help match movement to your symptoms. There is no universal twice-weekly adjustment-and-exercise prescription.

Treatment may also involve medicines, psychological or behavioral approaches, sleep support, and self-management. Read NIAMS guidance on fibromyalgia treatment. Keep prescribed care in place and tell your medical team about additional treatments.
